press release Aug 16, 2021
Fall 2021 Esports Tournaments

Scholarships offered to winners of high school scholastic esports tournaments. ATLANTA, GA (August 16, 2021) – This fall, NASEF is offering high school students the chance to compete for esports scholarships as they demonstrate their skill in popular titles Rocket League and Chess. The free tournaments will be powered by NASEF, the North America Scholastic Esports Federation, and offered free to all members of NASEF and HSEL, the High School Esports League.

NASEF leverages the skyrocketing popularity of esports to engage youth in programs that teach career and life skills. NASEF and HSEL recently joined forces to collectively offer more educational programs and tournaments. Staying true to its commitment to provide access to all youth, NASEF is continuing to offer two free tournaments per season as it has over its four-year history. NASEF member schools and community organizations can also choose to participate in HSEL’s additional free and paid tournaments for prizes and scholarships if they wish.

“Rocket League is a super-popular game that is based on soccer (with cars as the players), and Chess has surged in player numbers lately due to a popular TV series. High schoolers are going to be excited to jump into these tournaments—especially since they also can win scholarships!” said Bethany Pyles, director of coaching at NASEF. “Players will develop skills like strategy, teamwork, math, and analytics as they play these games. Plus, top players in both tournaments can qualify to win a ticket a live National Championship event to be jointly hosted by NASEF and HSEL.”

The tournament’s regular season runs from September 26th to November 21st, 2021, with playoffs following that. Students must be 13+ to participate. Visit NASEF to join.

“The central focus of NASEF is to connect play and learning in a meaningful way,” said Gerald Solomon, founder and executive director of NASEF. “While some students in NASEF clubs will participate in these and other games, all will develop social-emotional skills as they create and follow a club charter with a code of conduct. Students will run their clubs and tournaments, building career skills that match their areas of personal interest, such as event management, shoutcasting, streaming, marketing, finance, and more. The scholastic esports environment provides students a place to be entrepreneurial and zero in on their career aspirations.”

High schools and community-based organizations are invited to join NASEF and take advantage of a variety of free resources to leverage esports to help students game, grow, learn, and lead. From esports tournaments to Beyond the Game™ challenges, from classroom and OST curriculum to in-depth guides to careers in esports—all programs are offered free by NASEF.

Teams can sign up for tournaments on the Generation Esports platform which is used by NASEF and HSEL. Existing NASEF clubs simply reset their password to join the platform, then join the NASEF-HSEL community and select the Rocket League or Chess tournaments. They’ll have the opportunity to explore other free and paid options from HSEL and join if they wish. The Success Team at Generation Esports is readily available via email or phone to help with the process if needed.
