2020 Minecraft Face-Off Winners!

NASEF is excited to announce the winners of the 2020 Minecraft Face-Off! Students from grades 3rd to 12th entered from all across North America and built designs to represent their favorite professional hockey teams. Teams of up to four students worked together, experiencing the fun blend of video games and STEM learning as they completed this challenge.

Students used Minecraft and Flipgrid to create and submit their entries. They had the choice to enter one category or all three: design their favorite professional hockey team’s logo and jersey and build a next-generation hockey arena.

“Judging the submissions was sort of like watching a hockey player complete a hat trick!” said Steve Isaacs, a leader in game-based learning and the producer of Minefaire, a massive fan experience. “Through the designs and the video submissions, we got to see the students’ skill and confidence and creative angles. I’m proud of every single student who entered!”

Competition judge, STEM and Computer Science instructional facilitator, and Minecraft expert, Erik Leitner said, “To say our participants made judging a challenge would be an understatement. We originally planned to select one winner for each category, but the student’s creations were innovative, beautiful and exceeded expectations in every imaginable way! We couldn’t narrow it down, so we decided to award first, second, and third place for each category. We were blown away again and again, and it’s all due to the quality of the designs.”

The Grand Prize Winner is the Flying V from Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Their team had three members that were representing the Anaheim Ducks with their submission. The students are all in grades three to six. They entered all three categories and scored high in all of them, garnering the overall prize for the whole event. Congratulations!

Sabita S., whose child was in the Junior Lady Ducks Designers representing the Anaheim Ducks, said, “The kids will be so thrilled [that their video submission will be posted]. Thanks again for hosting this competition. It taught our kids so much!” Wait till they find out they’re winners!

All the creations were fabulous, and whether they placed in the top three or not, everyone had fun in the process. Parent Kim S., whose kids formed the Wienerschnitzel Masters team competing for the Anaheim Ducks, said, “The kids put a ton of thought and work into it. There is some pretty fun stuff like cool concession stands and even Zambonis. It was a great, fun project for them. They had a blast and have been inviting their friends in to tour!”

We received so many submissions, we had to create a video wall to showcase them all. Check out the compilation here:
