The 2020 NASEF Minecraft Face-Off is a competition for students in grades 3rd-12th. We’re looking for teams of up to 4 students who want to face-off against teams throughout the United States and Canada in the creation of innovative designs using Minecraft and Flipgrid. Design your favorite professional hockey team’s logo and jersey and build a next-generation hockey arena. Compete in one Challenge or choose to complete them all! The puck has dropped in the opening face-off and the game is underway! Good luck and have fun.

How It Works

The North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) along with its Affiliates the Garden State Scholastic Esports, the Florida Scholastic Esports League and the Anaheim Ducks NHL Club have developed three design challenges for teams to complete and submit via Flipgrid by Friday, May 15, 2020. Make sure to join us on Friday, April 24, 2020 at 12:00pm PT | 3:00pm ET on the NASEF Twitch Channel, as we will review each challenge, share tips, information, how-tos and live-builds. 

What you need to do to enter the 2020 NASEF Minecraft Face-Off:

  • Watch our stream (it will be available for playback, in case you miss our stream)
  • Review our the eligibility requirements
  • An adult must register their team (up to 4 members will be accepted). During the registration process, indicate the professional hockey team that you’ll be representing. Once your registration is confirmed, you will be sent an email with the Flipgrid link that contains the Challenge details.
  • Follow the Challenge guidelines in Flipgrid
  • Use Minecraft to design the Challenge
  • Submit your completed video in Flipgrid. The video should be submitted by the adult registrant.
  • The Team’s name must be used as the display name for the Flipgrid video submission. 
  • Share your video on Twitter, using the hashtag #MinecraftFaceOff

Challenges

Challenge #1: Hockey Team Logo Design Challenge

Recreate (or reimagine) your favorite hockey team logo in Minecraft! Will you build it block by block, code it, or snazz it up in your own way?

Submit a video in Flipgrid of your favorite hockey team logo created in Minecraft and share your link on Twitter! Include the hashtag #MinecraftFaceOff

(Scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest points achievable)

  • Use of Team Colors
    • Your logo design includes aesthetic use of team colors with touches that enhance the color scheme
  • Originality
    • Your logo design is original while keeping the team design aesthetic
  • Creativity
    • Your build uses unique and clever strategies in bringing your vision to life, such as creating entirely new experiences and ideas
  • Aesthetics
    • Your build is thoughtful and visually pleasing uses a variety of in-game tools and materials to create a polished look

Challenge #2: Hockey Jersey Design Challenge

Redesign your favorite hockey team jersey in Minecraft! What elements would you include in your custom jersey? Will you incorporate a new logo, color scheme, or mascot?

    • Your design includes the team logo (or your redesigned team logo) that is distinct and recognizable

    • Your build uses unique and clever strategies in bringing your vision to life, such as creating entirely new experiences and ideas
  • Aesthetics
    • Your build is thoughtful and visually pleasing and uses a variety of in-game tools and materials to create a polished look

Challenge #3: Hockey Arena Design Challenge

It's the year 2120, and your favorite hockey team is accepting proposals for their new arena. Design and build your ultimate hockey arena in Minecraft! Will your venue be exclusively used for hockey, or will it have multiple uses? Where will it be? How will fans be transported to it? How will you purchase concessions and merch?

Submit a video in Flipgrid of your vision for a new arena for your favorite hockey team created in Minecraft and share your link on Twitter! Include the hashtag #MinecraftFaceOff

  • Innovation
    • Your design changes the existing notion of what an arena should be by introducing new ideas, concepts, layouts, and visitor experiences
  • Creativity
    • Your build uses unique and clever strategies in bringing your vision to life, such as creating entirely new experiences and ideas. 
  • Design
    • Your design shows that your build was well thought out and preplanned. There  is an attention to detail and the build appears finished and complete.
  • Aesthetics
    • Your build is thoughtful and visually pleasing and uses a variety of in-game tools and materials to create a polished look.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the 2020 NASEF Minecraft Face-Off, all entries must meet the basic requirements:

  • Complete registration on the North America Scholastic Esports Federation website. An adult must serve as the Team’s General Manager (adult sponsor) for registration and submission.
  • Teams are comprised of students in grades 3rd-12th residing in the United States and Canada; 
  • Must be your own original work;
  • Must not contain any content that is obscene or offensive;
  • Must not contain your image or any identification markers;
  • Must be shareable;
  • Follow the Challenge guidelines as outlined in Flipgrid; 
  • Completed videos must be submitted in Flipgrid.

Scoring

Each design submitted by a team will be reviewed using a rubric specifically created for each Challenge. The top team scores for the individual Challenges will be ranked into 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In addition, teams will be eligible for a grand prize based on their performance on the individual Challenges combined across all Challenges.

 

Awards

The North America Scholastic Esports Federation will award a winning team for each Challenge and a team for the Grand Prize. For the winning team of each Challenge, each team member will be awarded with (1) copy of the new Minecraft Dungeons Hero Edition. An all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!

For the Grand Prize winning team, each team member will be awarded with (1) Xbox One Minecraft Creeper Wireless Controller or Microsoft Xbox One Minecraft Pig Edition Wireless Controller AND (1) Minecraft Dungeons Hero Edition. 

NASEF is also working with professional hockey teams for additional awards and prizes. We will announce involvement from NHL Clubs as they come aboard.
