Strong international network enables Universidad Anáhuac México to offer significant learning opportunities related to esports while expanding tournament play through the North America Scholastic Esports Federation

ATLANTA, GA (August 10, 2021) – Esports are booming, and students in Mexico are excited to not just play the games, but to pursue related careers. To support this thirst for competition and education, Universidad Anáhuac México has just become an affiliate of the North America Scholastic Esports Federation. NASEF will provide free tournaments, programs, curriculum, and expertise to help scholastic esports grow and thrive in Mexico.

NASEF leverages massive student interest in team-based competitive video gaming, offering meaningful career and STEM education alongside tournaments. Students learn about possible career pathways, enter Beyond the Game creative and analytic challenges, manage clubs and events and fundraising, and compete in tournaments in popular game titles.

“Our main goal is the development of scholastic and competitive esports in a safe and regulated environment for students, helping them develop abilities and skills for their future,” said Dr. Héctor Igor Rubio Sosa, director of Anáhuac México Esports. “With this objective in mind we will become NASEF’s right arm in México and Latino America helping any institution with those goals in mind, never losing focus on the students, educators and parents that surround them; always promoting the values and ideals we strive for with all our activities and programs.”

A key member of Anáhuac México Esports is David Amaro, not just a local leader, but also international, having just completed a rigorous development program to become a NASEF Scholastic Fellow. He and other leading educators from around the world joined this professional learning community to share ideas and experiences for leveraging esports for education. Already, Anáhuac México´s PrepaLeague collaborated with the Semper Altius network of over 40 educational institutions for a Rocket League Open Tournament which allowed hundreds of students to keep united and connected despite the physical distancing needed in the current global situation. This event generated interest within the scholastic community and yielded the development of the first official clubs formed around scholastic esports in México, connecting educators and students in different countries in North America and Latin America.

The Universidad Anáhuac México’s vision is to create and foster competitive esports programs through the lens of academics and learning in Mexico middle schools and high schools by providing assistance, organizing tournaments, and presenting information to schools and advisers. NASEF offers a unique focus on diversity with an emphasis on cultivating talents in potentially underserved populations and provide a pathway to college scholarships and careers in the gaming industry.

“Research demonstrates the effectiveness of esports as a tool for meaningful STEM and social-emotional learning,” said Gerald Solomon, founder and executive director of NASEF. “We’re thrilled to have Universidad Anáhuac México in the NASEF family, where educators will be able to learn best practices from other community networks with experience implementing scholastic esports programs. Of course, the students will be thrilled to take part in huge tournaments in popular games. We’re excited to support Universidad Anáhuac México and see the growth across Mexico as a whole in the coming years.”

Dr. Sosa said, "After years working on evolving an integral education system, we found the next step in scholastic esports. It allows us to reach students in the place they express and develop their passions—now we have the chance to connect those passions with other students in a global network through our relationship with NASEF. Students will have the opportunity to share and exchange ideas and experiences in the name of educational and personal development, all this around gaming.”

Schools across Mexico are invited to join Universidad Anáhuac México and NASEF and tap into their events and resources; contact PhD Igor Rubio Sosa on email: [email protected]
