High School Fall 2018 Overwatch Tournament in Full Swing in North America Scholastic Esports Federation

Students to compete in free tournaments while receiving coaching on game skills and learning about careers in the esports ecosystem

(Orange County, CA – November 2, 2018) – The Overwatch tournament in the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) is in full swing. Student teams are competing for top honors in the tournament, whether representing a local high school or a community group like the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, or other out-of-school organization.

The Wolverines, the Aliso Niguel High School team from Southern California, is currently undefeated and in first place, with the also-undefeated University High School team from Irvine, California, in second. Unlike many high school competitions which offer only regional matches, NASEF Clubs compete with others based solely on team ranking, not geography. That’s why the team from British Columbia, Canada, is right in the mix with U.S. teams, currently mid-pack in the rankings. Students from across North America are involved, from a large number of schools in California, to Louisville, Nebraska, to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Enrollment continues to rise, with more than 100 active Clubs all across the U.S. and Canada.

NASEF is different from other esports (competitive video gameplay) environments because it draws overt connections between play and learning, creating a fun and relevant experience for all high schoolers. Every student in every active Club receives free support and workshops ranging from developing specific game skills, to managing stress levels in a game or in life, to organizing tournaments which involves careers like event planning and marketing.

Because of its excellent developer relationships, NASEF is successfully intertwining this quality learning with an authentic gaming experience. NASEF is using the Tespa Compete platform to manage their high school tournament this Fall.

Mark Deppe, Commissioner of NASEF, said, “Blizzard Entertainment and Tespa’s services provide a high-quality tournament to the competitors in our high school Clubs. Beyond that, dozens of professionals in the esports industry and other related STEM careers provide relevant resources to equip any interested youth with tools and an environment for exploring and expressing their talents.”

In addition to the featured season-long Overwatch Tournament, NASEF Clubs also have the option to participate in three shorter-term “Extra Credit” tournaments featuring Hearthstone, Fortnite, and Overwatch 1v1.

High schools and community-based organizations are invited to join NASEF to receive many benefits, all free: resources for starting a club; toolkits and workshops teaching about esports and STEM careers;  guides to developing a competitive team; tournament participation; gameskills coaching for students, and more. Activate a club with NASEF for immediate access to all tools and the ability to select to participate in desired tournaments during the open opt-in periods.
