In addition to his work in AI, Joe is a pioneer in elementary scholastic esports, launching Clovis Unified School District’s first district-supported program through the Buchanan Area Elementary Region (B.A.E.R.) League. He has organized large-scale tournaments featuring Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, engaging dozens of student teams, coaches, and families in structured, inclusive competition. His work emphasizes not just gameplay, but leadership, communication, shoutcasting, digital media, and career pathway skills—showcasing how esports can be a powerful tool for 21st-century learning.

Joe’s passion lies in making bold ideas approachable, building sustainable systems like his “Esports in a Box” model, and inspiring students and educators alike to see gaming as a gateway to community, creativity, and lifelong success.

"I chose to become a NASEF Scholastic Fellow because I believe esports is one of the most powerful and inclusive ways to connect students to learning, leadership, and one another. After launching Clovis Unified’s first elementary esports program and seeing the impact it had on our students' confidence, collaboration, and joy, I knew I wanted to help build systems that could scale and support others. Becoming a Fellow allows me to amplify this work, share resources, and grow a movement that starts with play—but leads to real-world purpose."

"My favorite games are the ones that bring people together—where collaboration, communication, and shared problem-solving take center stage. That’s why I’m drawn to games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros., which create moments of excitement, strategy, and teamwork, especially in the elementary esports space. I love watching students connect over these experiences and realize that their passions can lead to real-world skills and meaningful relationships."
